chapter 9 prompts- A Good Man- Week 7

Read Ch. 9 introduction and the following from the "Families" section, and respond in your Reader's Journal :

"A Good Man . . . " p.251, Q # 1, 2, 3

1. To me, the Grandmother felt largely ignored by everyone in this story. The Misfit gave her the most attention of anyone in the story before he murdered her. She is generally dismissed and put aside by her son and his wife, and a little resented by the children. They seem like they like getting her goat.  She, for her part, wants to be included. She wants her thoughts and opinions to matter, but they don't. I felt sympathy for the grandmother, but her manipulation did end up leading the family to their doom.

2. O'Connor's characters are realistic. I would say that exactly none of them are "likeable", but you still don't want to see them die. O'Connor makes them funny by giving them each their own voice. They are very distinctive from each other and yet, relate able to real people. I did not find them "funny" in the classic sense. This story didn't amuse me at all. In fact, I was really affected by the reading. I have a hard time when children are murdered in movies, reading, etc.

3. The story begins as a fairly lighthearted portrayal of an average family taking a vacation. Although the character "The Misfit" is mentioned, you don't really think the family is going to bump into him or his gang. The story shifts when the car crashes, but, as a reader it is still easy to imagine that the family will be alright. The car even ends right side up. But, then the men appear with the guns, and you know that it will not end well.
