"Cathedral" --p525 #1, 3

1. The narrator's voice changes later in the story, but at first it is bitter, questioning, and .... kind of abrasive. You just don't care for him. Carver uses first person perspective to give the reader a view into the voice of the narrator. We see what he says, and to a degree, we see what he thinks. What attitude does the voice suggest we take..? Hard question. I feel like we are a bit indifferent to the narrator for a long time, until he is able to be kind, welcoming and compassionate to his wife's guest.

3. The meaning of the husband's prayer before dinner is to illustrate how non-religious he is. This is supported in the text when he relates to Robert that he cannot explain a cathedral, because cathedrals have no meaning to him. They have no meaning, because he isn't religious.
