Blackberries- Ellen Hunnicutt

My initial reaction, reading all the way through this story is that this is a husband and wife that have been married for some time. They are disconnected from each other. They have different interests and viewpoints. It seems to me this story is addressing their aging. The wife says it is almost September, and that summer is almost over and the husband states it is barely noon, and they have lots of time. The wife's aging looks are referenced early in the story, yet the man seems strong and powerful and interested in physical activity. This makes me wonder if she isn't older than he.
